University of Texas at Austin - Longhorn women’s basketball camp

The summer of 2007 was the first summer camp session for newly acquired women’s coach Gail Goestenkors. Coach “G” came to the University of Texas after 15 seasons coaching the Duke Blue Devils. She ranks 3rd in NCAA Division I winning percentage among active women’s basketball coaches. Sheeta Williams is a special assistant on the University of Texas women’s basketball coaching staff and director of the women’s summer camp sessions. Coach Williams was a former Duke University guard and seven year assistant to Coach G before taking a position with UT.

There were an estimated 300 girls at the fundamental basketball camp the week our daughter attended. The age of girls attending this session were between ten and seventeen. The window of time for check-in was a couple of hours in one of the student buildings. As expected, it was crowded in the hallway where check-in was taking place, but very well organized with enough tables and counselors to divide the numbers. Girls had the choice to spend the week in the dorms or go home each night [our daughter opted for the full, college experience].

After check-in, parents were able to accompany their daughters to the dorms and get them settled into their rooms. Counselors were located throughout the hallways, directing and answering questions. An orientation was scheduled in one of the lecture halls for camp participants, shortly after check-in. I slipped my daughter a $20 bill and said my "goodbyes."

Parents have the opportunity to watch the camp through the day if they desire. We talked to our daughter every night by phone to get the take on camp life. Local phone calls are allowed on the phone in each dorm room.

The last day of camp, parents were invited to attend the last two hours of camp. Games and a few drills were performed by the camp attendees. The focus displayed by the girls during games and drills demonstrated the quality of instruction taught during the week.

The end of camp talk by Coach G and Coach Williams left the campers with inspiration to continue working on their game. I would recommend this camp to any girl aspiring to improve their skills and knowledge of the game. For the more motivated player, UT also has an advanced basketball training camp.
